The Shabeelle which originates in the Ethiopian Highlands meanders through the entire territory of central and Southern Somalia. Together with the Jubba River they form the basin that is the bread-basket of Somalia. The two rivers both originate in the Ethiopian Highlands join near the Southern City of Kismanyu before emptying into the Indian Ocean. It was estimated that with appropriate technoligy and goodwill of the rulers of Somalia this basin would sustain the entire food and water needs of the people of Somalia. Somalia produces the best Bananas in the world and the climate and climatic conditions of the basin between the two rivers is capable of producing the best fruits and horticulture which have ready and untapped markets in Europe and the Middle East. Those resources are largely untapped and together with the new wood, charcoal, marine and terrestrial wildlife form the backbone of the financial and military influence of the warlords from central Somalia who now control the basin between the two Rivers.
